Welcome, enlightened few.
Ever felt like you're using the same tired old arguments over and over? Ever felt like you need to get your opinion heard? Ever wanted to show someone up in an intelligent and satisfying way? It sounds like you want to try it out. Like shouting at people? You can do this too, because debating is arguing in disguise!
But do you know your Parliamentary from your Lincoln-Douglas? Your Straw Man from your False Dichotomy?
Hopefully, you'll be able to shout--I mean, debate with each other confidently and sensibly! (Phht, sensibly?)
An introduction to Debate
Parliamentary Debating - the debate we'll be using
List of Logical Fallacies - you'll need this to pick the opposition team's argument to bits.
The idea behind Parliamentary debating is that you arrive 15 minutes before the debate, split into your two teams, and are given your Motion, from which you have to formulate points for your first and second speakers which they will then use to debate afterwards.
At one minute (of five minutes in total) into their speeches, the timekeeper will announce that Points of Information can now be asked - short, sharp, questions to the speaker on the topic at hand, which they can either accept of deny and answer quickly. At four minutes, the window of questioning ends.
This is repeated between your team and the opposition: First (Team A), First (B), Second (A, who rebuts, or counter argues against the opposition), Second (B).
The last person also sums up the argument to the audience, and ultimately the judges, who will decide which team the better.
If you want to join the group, have a read of the links, and I'll be seeing you soon!
